Lum's was one of the best places to get a hot dog steam in beer and they used the finest dogs around. None of the cheap filler meat.. Burger Chef's went bankrupt I also think Lum's went bankrupt back in the late 70's or very early 80's. Burger Chef's just in the last 4 years if that long....

I hope this helps you for they were all over Ga. and I loved Lum's dogs and a picture of beer with my meal there.....

Yes, I remember Lum's, they had hot dogs boiled in Beer. Unique huh? I don't know what happened to them.
I also miss Burger Chef. No, Burger Chef didn't go out of business, they were absorbed and then dismantled by Hardee's, because they were so successful.
Place I miss, (In Lima Ohio), was "The Red Barn" They were like McDonald's, or Burger Chef, except their stacker was the, "Big Barney". Maybe Red Barn was just a local joint, but I still miss it.

7-year old threads still exist?

When I was a grad student at University of Florida in 1970 Lum's was a sandwich-and-beer type of place, extremely popular with students over 21. I was in the service for 4 years and, when I got back to Florida in 1974, it had been pretty much destroyed by changing to a family restaurant - basically a clone of Denny's.

I'm from Milwaukee, WI. I remember Burger Chef, Big Boys,
The Red Barn, Arthur Treachers Fish & Chips, Zantigo's, and Dog N Suds. How I miss the good old days of fast food. None of them are left around here anymore.

Lum's Family restaurants are still around, but I was unable to locate any web page for them. I liked the "burger bar" for Burger Chef where you put on your own condiments.

I remember hearing of Burger Chef but I never saw one, I did see a Lum's, but I was a kid then and "hot dogs steamed in beer" didn't appeal to me, I remember seeing Lum's commercials on TV, Milton Berle used to do them.

You're giving away age identity to those in the know. Sure, I totally remember Burger Chef. I remember 15 cent burgers. Back when air was clean, and sex was dirty. Yup, Burgers are $6.00 now, the air's filthy, and, well, you know the rest. Getting some, was 2nd, and third gear, tire squelling. Bush was something you drove into, before trying to put your car into the garage. I could go on and on. Peace.

I agree with Haplo, Pioneer Chicken was the best!

For the burger bar fans, look for Fuddruckers. Probably more expensive but they have a consistently good rib eye steak sandwich and burger and you get to load your own condiments.
