by Edna St. Vincent Millay

What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why,
I have forgotten, and what arms have lain
Under my head till morning; but the rain
Is full of ghosts tonight, that tap and sigh
Upon the glass and listen for reply;
And in my heart there stirs a quiet pain
For unremembered lads that not again
Will turn to me at midnight with a cry.
Thus in the winter stands a lonely tree,
Nor knows what birds have vanished one by one,
Yet know its boughs more silent than before:
I cannot say what loves have come and gone;
I only know that summer sang in me
A little while, that in me sings no more.

It's about the old age of a woman fondly remembering all the dalliances of her youth. She mourns for those times and rather than dwelling on her present is enmeshed in her own past, so she can sing no more.

It's about getting old. And the things we took too lightly that we can no longer do.

Of course, it's different for guys. I wish I had this many women coming on to me when I was younger and could do something about it.

I hope this stuff isn't on your Sargeant's exam.

She was very radical for her time. She often wrote about her personal experience with multiple partners. She got married, I believe, but her husband allowed her to sleep with other people.I think her poetry is generally pretty good. 7.5/10 for famous ones.
