The condo I live in regularly does servicing for the suites, like checking the fire alarms, making sure the sink isnt clogged, replacing air filter, etc...

But is there anyway to not allow them to enter your apartment unless you were inside? The apartment has the master key for all suites.

For the fire alarm, its by law that they need to make sure its working..

I am just creeped out that people are coming into my apartment and touching my things (cause no one is home when they are doing the servicing), and who knows if they will steal something valuable if its left around and easily accessible.

And I am more creeped out cause I found like a chalk carving (did it in class last year in a really really boring class - it looks ugly) broken in half in its original spot. I can just imagine some guy going oh look at that its so weird and broke it somehow. I think its like an invasion of privacy and I just dont feel comfortable with them coming in when and looking at my stuff!

Is there anyway to get around this? They give us the times they do the servicing, its like on Monday, etc. Or from 8am to 6pm... and no one will be home around those times.

Anyone have any experience with this? Any help will be appreciated.

I cant just change the lock because they'll require me to give them a copy for the servicing...

I live in California. Here the management has the right to enter your apartment with a 24 hour notice. They can also go in for an emergency without notice. Emergency such as smoke or water coming from your unit.In other cases they are not allowed to randomly go into your unit.I guess it depends on the state where you live.
If you have a friend or relative that could apartment set on the days they are coming in..This might be a solution.

Landlords, or HOAs, sometimes require entry into your unit to check things. You cannot deny them completely.

If a service is required, like a Fire Alarm inspection, they give fair warning that the unit must be available for inspection between certain times. This happens once a year at my condo complex. There is nothing that says YOU have to be there. You can arrange for someone you trust to be there instead.

It's all just part of the give and take of life. Again, for the fire inspection, ask your HOA to have it done on a Saturday next time. That's what our HOA does.

Find out what kind of a lock you have and go buy one just like it and put it in.

Did you know that your neighbor can take his lock to a locksmith and have a master key made that will open your door?

If your landlord has a master key, his teenage son also has a copy of this key.

Look at your contract. It should say they must give you notice of anyone entering the apartment and you must be there. The notice should be at least 24 hours. Check the local laws on contracts.

You signed the contract, I am sure it is stipulated somewhere in the contract. But honestly that is standard procedure in rental units. All that is required is to give notice that they will be doing a inspection, perfectly legal.

Get a large scary dog or a private security tape. they don't cost that much (the tape, not the dog)
