I start Sept. with Fall decorating. I've got loads of little pumpkin and leaf touches for the house. I made some simple pumpkins by rolling up pairs of old (clean) socks and then pulling a piece of orange felt around it and tying the ends together. The ends are wrapped in twine to look like a stem and that's it!
For leafy garlands I bought bags of fake autumn leaves ($1 for 100 at the dollar store). Then I loaded my sewing machine with clear (monofilament) thread. I stitch down the length of a leaf, and then add another leaf at the end and continue. The result is a garland of leaves as long as I want. I drape these over anything I can. Cheap and fun! This garland trick works with ANYTHING you can stitch on, including paper cut-outs so it's great for all seasons.
Grab some inexpensive frames (dollar store, again) paint them up in golds, bronzes, etc. and fill them with real and/or fake autumn leaves and hang them wherever I can. You can also decoupage clear glass plate backs with leaves and hang them from plate hangers in the kitchen/diningroom.
I love the colors of autumn. My house is painted in rich golds, reds, and subtle greens to reflect my love of the season and any of these decorations bring out the richness of autumn.

There's a lot of ways to get into the spirit. When the county fair is here I know it's fall and fun is near. The turning of the leaves puts me in the mood too, I like to take a day or overnight trip where this happens or get out my favorite sweater and sweats, take a walk in the park or woods while sipping a cup of hot cocoa-it will be cool enuff soon. Seeing fields of pumpkins and foddershocks add to the feeling. Fall is my favorite time of year, so full of things yet to do, before winter sets in. Enjoy it!
