Love, friendship cannot be that selfish.
Love, eros, being in love has a lot of it!! Because while being in love we want to "own" the other person as well to belong to him/her. And in a way, we fall in love with the ideal we have in OUR mind, thus trying to ..transform that ohter person to that ideal picture we have in our mind. Meaning, everything begins and ends in our own mind and heart. Isn't this selfishness??
Love, is not selfish. "In love", is!

Since you specified that you were defining 'love' as agape love, then no, I do not believe the essence of love is selfish. Agape love is all about unconditional and self-sacrificial love. So, love in which you put someone else above yourself in terms of importance. This is a love that will not become jealous and will not fade if unreciprocated. However, agape love is, sadly, quite rare. Humans are insecure and typically selfish by nature, so unconditional and selfless love is uncommon.

Well I do not believe that love can be selfish.
I do believe that people can be selfish, it is in some people's nature to be selfish, and expect everything and give nothing.

Trick question, buzz...........that's been a conundrum for, well since the beginning of time. You're being very broad in the word "selfish"..........Would a mother give up her life for a child? Would a child give an organ to a sibling, and have an nil chance of survival?? Too broad a question, but it does make one think, "how selfish am I"..........that's one we all have to look at in our inner selves.....Especially these days...

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It is not happy about injustice but is glad whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

I think that every single human act is inevitably driven by a self centered motive. All except for dying for someone, this is the only thing i can think of
love is very selfish, you are trying to fulfill a need. But, it can also be unselfish, because you want to fulfill others need as well.

Maybe love can but true love can't.
When you realized whatever you do you put your True Love before you, and at that time you will know selfishness already packed their belonging and vanished..
