What would you have done after the attacks of 9/11?
I find it interesting to hear what people say they would have done if they were president at the time. Personly (don't critisize me or anything) I would have flattened the country and any surrounding countries involved. Let it be a lesson to the surrounding nations (not a demonstration of power but why they shoudln't attack the US).

The second part is in Somalia when the Black Hawks were shot down, there was real footage of the dead american soldiers (that were killed in the crash) being "dragged" through the streets with people cheering. That really got to me, both me and my dad would have flattend the country as well, not to be violent or anything but doing that to our dead american soldiers is extremely offensive to me, I would have flattened the country without a word. Actions such as that are uncalled for and should never be done. That country should have been flattened! Letting nothing survive, i'm still very angry over that

First I would have met with every head of law enforcement to ensure that Al Qaeda was responsible. Then I would have sought to find out where they were, how they did it, and what are the ramifications of getting them out of the picture. Then I would have started a campaign with the U.N. to villify them in the international community. I would also have reached out to the moderate and respectable sheiks in the Muslim world to help alienate Al Qaeda. I would have boosted the CIA's capability of infiltrating al Qaeda to find out more about it and their recruiting practices.

In the public front, I would have given the Taliban the ultimatum as Bush did with a deadline just long enough to imbed spies and gain information about al Qaeda. It would have looked like a good gesture to the Muslim world while also serving an alternative purpose of letting the US get key information on how an organization as big as al Qaeda can get started and grow to the point it has.

I would not have rounded up all terror suspects and placed them in a camp in plain view for everyone to see and target as a sign of American arrogance. Sure I would have rounded them up, but I would have kept them spread out over military installations around the world. They would have been interrogated and either charged, deported, extradited to another country that was seeking them, or freed.

While putting on a public show for the rest of the world, I would have gone to Pakistan and Uzbekistan and secured an agreement with them allowing either NATO or UN led squadrons into these countries to search for al Qaeda once they began to flee Afghanistan. Musharaaf is resistant to allowing US led forces into his country because of the fear of a backlash from fundamental Muslims. By ensuring that no US led squadrons would be allowed to cross his borders, I believe that it would have made him feel more at ease and would have given him better leverage with his people. Some will say that the international community does not have the desire to seek out and capture al Qaeda like American forces do, but with the international campaign being waged against al Qaeda, I say they would be more than willing to cooperate. And it would be a lot more searching being conducted than current forces are allowed to do. If Musharaaf still resisted, then the spies would already have been imbedded pre-war to gain key locations to at least track their movements.

Next, once the war is under way, I would have let nothing deter or distract from the capture and destruction of al Qaeda. There simply were no al Qaeda in Iraq. By engaging in that conflict, it served no purpose except to make America and some its allies lightning rods for the Muslim world. It has created a difficult environment for intelligence to be gathered not just for al Qaeda, but for other smaller terrorist organizations. I would have poured the money spent on Iraq into intelligence and updating America's homeland defenses. It could have also served as a catlyst for changes in all departments as to how they were directed and run. I am not referring to the DHS as that has become just another defunct beureucratic mess that stumbles over its own feet. Instead, I am talking about whole sale hirings and firings until each department is competent enough work together.

As for Somalia, that is a mess that was destined for failure. The whole objective of Somalia changed from a day to day basis and had no direction. It was lead by too many individual militaries instead of the U.N. stepping up to the fore front and presenting itself as the clear leader. Instead they allowed the different militias inside of Somalia to grow under the ridiculous pretense that they would not steal food and shoot each other.

The US got caught up in the mire and tried to be a hero. They conducted the operation without letting any of the other international personnel know what they were going to do. Instead, the genrals went in with their Cold War military planning and John Wayne bravado and tried to fight an organized world in the middle of a chaotic scenario where the enemy was shrouded behind innocent civilian. And to think that any cooperation would be given from native Somalians after the attack just days prior on people regarded highly by Somalians was stupid. The generals set their men up for failure by underestimating the organization of the militias and the hatred for the international presence, especially the American presence.

As for what to do differently, simple. Don't go. Just don't do it. Let these third world countries figure out their political structures themselves. Sure it will be hard to sit by a let people be slaughtered, but as America is finding out now, we cannot force a country to be a particular way. The Somalis would have settled it themselves. Then based on the outcome, America could have adjusted its policies related to that country.

I would have been dependent upon the intelligence community to tell me what had happened, beyond the obvious, and reliant upon the pentagon to have established war strategies for what ever enemy it turned out to be.

I suspect there in lies the true failures leading to our misdirected efforts, and I would likely have fired a lot of people and restaffed, given what I have heard regarding Bush's loyalties I believe that is the first point that there would be any difference between what I would have done and what he did.

Knowing who to attack on 9/11 would have been a bit difficult, it took at least a few days to figure anything out.

What happened in Somolia is a different story though. Clinton screwed those troops over big time, first by refusing to allow them to take heavier armored vehicles.. and secondly by not unleashing hell on Mogadishu after they were attacked.

I was in second grade. The principal told all of the teachers for third grade and up to turn on the television, but my dumbass teacher decided to turn on our television, and scar us for the rest of our lives. I live in Alexandria, VA (about 7 miles from the pentagon) and there was smoke in the sky. All of the children were getting picked up early, and none of the students had any idea why. My mom picked me up, and told me that a plane went into the pentagon. My dad worked in the pentagon. We stayed up all night, telling ourselves that he was just stuck in horrible traffic. We waited all of the next day as well. Then we realized. He was gone. LillyLove♥.

Bush said anyone who harbors terrorists would be our enemy. Apparently he lied. Pakistan helped supply money to the terrorists, and Bin Laden left Afghanistan for Pakistan. Why aren't we bombing the crap out of them?
