that was the 80's. when every song was so alive and had music videos to match. now in days...the only videos playing are about people being pimps, being depressed, or women being portrayed as sexy symbols. but other then that? i think mtv has WAY too many reality shows...which brings it down. it needs more music to add to the "music" part of the channel. it shouldn't even be called mtv anymore. ugh. stupid people..

There are probably plenty of problems. The first problem is they didn't want to play country because they wanted to play rock. That's ok, but then they started playing hip hop and rap which isn't rock. They should go back to only playing rock which was their core ideal and if not start playing country, jazz and a host of other types of music.
The second problem they ran into was they didn't play enough different music videos. They would play the same 10 videos over and over for a couple of week. You can see on youtube hundreds of music videos so there was always enough music videos to keep things fresh.
I think the reason why MTV got out of the music business was they got greedy. You see they probably pay royalitys everytime they play a video. They make more money by airing their own material because they don't pay any royalties.
As far as I'm concerned, MTV died in the late 1980s when bubble gum pop by the likes of Britney Spears, Debbie Gibson, New Kids on the Block etc. hit the scene. Rap also became big on MTV then and grunge topped it off. CNN hit the scene then and was far more enetertaining so I lost interest in MTV except for the first couple of Real World shows (and even then it became overly produced and I stopped watching future seasons).

Because MTV's job is to feed moral and mental toxic waste to its fanbase- degenerate teens with the attention span of algae.

They are selling out to the reality genre. Actually they began to recede around twenty years ago, when they stopped showing videos regularly.

Although I'd rather not go into details as to why MTV displeases me, I can surly agree with you. It's pretty sad really...... a mere sign of the times...........

What goes up must come down. In MTV's case, what goes up must come down in a corpulent shepard's pie of repugnant filth.
