If we had the resources to investigate all the companies that do business in the US, you would probably find this to be a much more wide spread problem than it is being shown as being. I would bet money that the tobacco, automotive, and oil companies are full of problems. But, they have the fat cat lobbiest making sure everyone keeps their noses out of their business. How would you like to get a look a Trump's books?

I once worked at a non-profit and our books were audited each year. The way public audits work - the company pays a firm to do an "independent audit", no wonder so much goes unchecked. And the auditor is in the office for a few weeks only and can't really attest to the entire books. They frequently ask the internal folks to give them info, and the auditors rely on that info.

It is all a matter of risk/reward. Not a big risk of getting caught and reward for "cooking the books."
