for shoes...jazz shoes are best..they are flexible and have a slight heal on them.
as for clothing..you need to make sure that the outline of your legs are visible (no baggy sweats or longer skirts), this way the instructor can help you with your "lines". I would suggest a leotard and if you feel uncomfortable about it, a short skirt over the top of it, tights and ankle socks (keep the shoes from rubbing) make sure to wear a good supportive bra as well.

RE:
What should I wear to a modern dance class?
Can I wear sweat pants and a t-shirt or do I need to wear something more fitting like a leotard and tights? What type of shoes are appropriate? Is there anything I should know going into the class?

Wear comfortable pants, that aren't too loose so that you can get a lot of movement. Also wear a tight or fitted top so the instructor can see your movements. In way of shoes: Ballet shoes should be a good start and are good for a first class. However: this is only good for the first couple of classes. You should check with the studio/company/teacher to see what is appropriate for your class.

It depends on the type of class you're taking, and who you're taking it from. In general terms, you should wear tight fitting clothing, all black, and make sure you have you're hair pulled back and secure. You don't need shoes. Don't wear shirts with writing on them.
Tips for class: I'm not sure if you're a dancer or what kind of experience you've had, but when going across the floor, go ALL the way across, no matter what. If a teacher gives another person a correction, take it for yourself, as well. If a teacher gives you a correction, be a good listener (make eye contact, etc) and say 'thank you'. just be respectful of your teacher. and this sounds cheesy, but give it your all! try your hardest, and the teacher will notice that.

NO LEOTARDS. I would suggest something like cropped yoga pants and a tank or workout top. Nothing bulky, nothing with zippers, sleeves (unless fitted) and cropped pants allows you to, well, not trip. No shoes, but if you have bad feet something like some soft ballet shoes make some people more comfortable just no socks or you will slip. Hair up, jewelry off and be prepared to be on the ground, streching and working with other classmates.

ask your teacher for a specific dress code. i've taken some modern classes where i could have worn jeans, others where i needed a black leo and black tights. generally, half soles or barefeet for modern.

u shoud probly wear like some bootie shorts and a tite top. i like to wear just plain sports bras from target just to give u an idea fer a top. sweat pants and a t shirt r too baggy and a leotard is unecessary and in my opinion uncomfertable but if thats wat u wanna wear then go for it. and i suggest wearing foot undeez. here is some links to pics.
