A serious answer...mink is considered the standard for fur, it's durable, the fur can be dyed, and it comes in a variety of styles, from basic to formal. Sable is more expensive, and quite frankly hard to distinguish from mink unless you are furrier. Ermine in also a member of the same rodent family as minks and sables, but again more expensive.
Chinchilla is softer, plushier and more expensive. it can also look ostentatious...chinchilla fur is the pimp's fur of choice.
Rabbit is quite common. It's not durable, but it is available and it is cheap. It's soft, but it has that coarse rabbit-ty look that says cheap.
I don't like canine based furs, coyote, wolf, fox, simply because some unscrupulous people sell dog fur as wolf and coyote.
Lynx, bobcats, any feline family furs should be avoided because these animals are threatened. I would even stay away from vintage lynx, I wouldn't feel right wearing the reason these creatures are endangered.
Astrakhan is a lambskin, that curly black short fur worn in russian dancers hats and in the collars of little old lady coats. It's expensive but i always associate it with old ladies!
If you really want a fur coat; a ranch raised mink will give you a good coat that will last a long time. Do be sure that the vendor has been cold storing it, otherwise the fur will shed and could have a musty odor problem. Watch out if it says the fur was recently dry cleaned --furs should not be dry cleaned they need to be fur cleaned by a specialist. When you get your fur, store it properly and have it professionally cleaned every year. If you aren't sure about furs, sometimes a furrier will have second hand furs at excellent prices. The market for furs collapsed ten years ago and the few remaining furriers have some excellent bargains.

Lol Julius! Anyways, if you really want a fur coat, I think that a mink coat is the best kind....but then again, I don't really know much about or like fur coats that much. It's like wearing a dead animal...btw, I live in Mongolia which is freezing in the winter and practically everone wears fur coats here. My mom does...

Faux fur. I'm no enviromentalist fundamentalist. But how do you feel that an innocent animal died just to make your coat? Sure, it's warm and all. But what if a bunch of canibals killed humans just to make themselves a nice pair of boots? You would speak out against it, wouldn't you?

Make a little igloo for your Garden Gnome so he can ride out the storm. You can wrap him in a styrofoam container for insulation against the cold.
