i think a better question would be is how tolerant do you need to be to live in SF? SF is a very diverse city, and the towns around are just as diverse. if you like being surrounded by people and things that similar to you, SF may not be your town. But if you like seeing and exploring different things, and can agree to disagree, SF is your town.

It really does depend on your personality. It's a lot like being a conservative in New York City. You either revel in the chance to share your opinions... or you feel alienated by the fact that the majority is always against you.
If you're the sort of person who gets heartburn whenever the GOP loses an election, you're going to need a lot of Tums. Out of the San Francisco Bay Area's 15 seats in the House of Representatives, the Republicans usually only manage to win 1-2 seats. Electorally, this is "true blue" territory.

On the other hand, conservatives in San Francisco are very skilled at defending their positions (since they have to do it all the time). This means the region has produced more than its fair share of intelligent, articulate conservatives. Secretary of State Condeleezza Rice, FBI Director Robert Mueller, former Secretary of State George Schultz, and Representative Bill Thomas have all lived in the city at some point in their lives.

Someone who is true political and social conservative in the City of San Francisco??
Well, one might not hate it, but they'd encounter things/situations/people every day that would make him/her DAMN UNCOMFORTABLE!!

Perhaps...it just depends on your personality and how much you can handle being a minority. There are plenty of thoughtful progressive people in SF...there are also plenty of really annoying super radical wannabe socialists who could do everyone a favor by shoving a brick in their mouths. There are also some conservative people here and there who have learned to deal with the fact that they are surrounded by either more open-minded or more idiotic people.

You know, this really is absurd. There are 700.000 plus people living in SF. During the day, with commuters at work, the population is 1 million plus. Do you really believe every last one is a 'hippy or liberal'? A conservative can live in SF and be perfectly content as well as anywhere.

Not necessarily. I think keeping an open mind could be a plus. Oh, and don't take things too seriously or personal. The majority of people in SF may be liberal but they are nice. It is a great city with a mellow vibe.

They may like some things, but not like others. There are alot of conservative people there, despite the whole bay area being known for people being pretty liberal.

I love the bay area and would live in SF if I could afford it. You learn to agree to disagree. The good outweighs the bad if you ask me, even factoring in the board of supervisors/chris daly.
