Heh, always love a question putting Christians in a difficult position. How about this, look up where the word hell came from. Here's some starting info: the name/concept was borrowed/stolen from Norse mythology. Hel was the name of a place (the underworld for those who died deaths unworthy of Valhalla) and the goddess who watched over this underworld. Why answer the vague question when you can pick at Christians willingness to steal other religions concepts, words, etc...

I think it is a shame if Christians give you the impression that Christianity is something that should be avoided. Maybe you should look for a Christian who is mature in his or her beliefs and practices what the Faith teaches and listen to what they have to say. You may be surprised what you may learn.

Christianity is a good thing. It should lift people up and help those in need. It teaches how a person can develop the good that is inside of them and diminish what is harmful. If you don't see this in Christian people then maybe you are looking in the wrong places or at the wrong people. Your question doesn't make sense. If we all find out one day that there is a heaven and hell I'm afraid you'll find out that being separated from Christians may not be a good thing.

Hell is spending eternity with someone who has committed a grave sin offending God and rejecting him.Whether that person is a Christian or not has no bearing on the situation.

The first group of people that were called christians were the follower of Jesus in Crete http://www.gracenotes.info/topics/crete.html

These are the people that believed on the gospel of Paul, and have start living in according to the kind of life that was based on the teaching of Christ.

They where called chrisitians because during that time if a person is a slave to some one they are labeled or associated to their master. They live a Christ like life, it became their lifestyle that people noticed them as slave to Christ, thereby getting that name.

The question is tricky because it is trying to associate a person who had goes to church or have been born to a family who where labeled as christians. Christianity isnt about being in a group it is in living according to Christ Jesus.

No, there would be no genuine follower of Christ Jesus in Hell. Hell was created for demons, murderers, perverts and people who doesnt accept Christ as their savior.

There could be a person in hell who had come to hear the gospel of Christ but didnt believe on it. There could be even a great number of people in hell who had been a member of a christian church but havent live in according to the gosple that was being preach by that church.

So affiliation or group membership doesnt guarantee one to be safe from going to hell. It is the personal relationship with Christ Jesus that would make sure one to be off, far off from going to hell.
