All of the above. Virginia is a conservative state, thus the student population is much more diverse. (I've been to schools in "liberal" states and, while individual expression is encouraged, it must be "authorized" individual expression.)

Now, what you are going to see the students dressed can also depend on where the school is located at. About two or so years ago. there was one high school where a lot of the ladies were dressing in Japanese/Chinese inspired clothing. I did not see it any where else and I haven't seen it since. If you are looking at high schools out in areas such as Mecklenburg or Wise county, you aren't going to see many extreme styles as you would in NOVA. (Mostly a mix of preppy, "farm boy," and a small touch of what most people describe as emo now.

I really haven't seen many "surfer" styles recently. I know that it was very popular years ago (when I was in middle school), and there was a very big subset of this especially towards the Newport News and Virginia Beach area. I haven't been out that way in a bit.

List in your question which areas you are looking at in specific, and maybe someone can give you a bit more information.
