It is a "throw-away" word, more as a sop than a salve

No, I don't think sorry is overused. In fact I think it is underused ( is that a word? ). Anyway, I think too many people have a sense of entitlement in life. They do not feel the need to take responsibility for their actions and the impact that their actions can have on others. That is, they feel no sorrow.
Yes, an apology can be insincere but I don't think that every "sorry" uttered is insincere. The true proof is whether or not a person continues a behavior for which they have apologized. If they change their ways, they have experienced true regret. If they repeat the behavior they are nowhere near sorry and shouldn't even let the word fall from their lips.

I think its really overused, like a lot of other words, but I guess depending on the situation, you can tell if someone is sincere or not. The word still means a lot, you just have to be more careful when people say it to you.

Most definitely. Back in the day you couldn't pay someone to apologize. Nowadays, people say sorry at the slightest things, even me. My job is small and crowded with people, and anytime I even tap someone I just automatically say sorry and vice versa. But bcuz the space is so small we're constantly saying it all day, and most of the time when I say it I roll my eyes afterward.

"Sorry" in this day and time, can mean different things. If "sorry" is said by someone you've come to know as someone sincere and meaningful, then it could possibly have a significance. But, coming from most people it is feigned, especially when said quickly and thoughtlessly.

Sorry, but I don't. LOL
OK, so it is overused a lot, but when said sincerly, it is still a very important word.

Yes, I do.
I would prefer a more sincere response such as "I apologize."
