I have always had, and always will have, the Gryphon as my Totem and heraldic device. In fact if you look close at my avatar you can see the emerald Gryphon engraved in the center of my breastplate (there's a bigger pic on my 360), and the single tattoo I wear which covers my right pectoral is an emerald Gryphon. I tend to be Seelie in nature, highly honorable, slow to anger but fierce in a fight, unwilling to back down, but I can also be righteous and judgemental - in short, a true Son of House Gwydion. Otherwise most of the synopsis on the Griffin as stated above hits close to the mark with me.

I am a phoenix.

But I really identify with the esoteric (not mythic) idea of the siren and mermaid. Sirens were first depicted as a bird/woman (prehaps related to the Egyptian Ba--the oversoul that transmigrated to the underworld after death) and later came to be depicted as a woman with wings or birdlike features and a mermaid's tale. Esoterically, sirens may have been psychopomps--beings who led the souls of the dead to the underworld and gave out knowledge that was verboten for the living to hear (thus the myths about sirens and mermaids singing to men as they die. Then again sexual allegory can be read into this as well with reference to the "little death").

A feminine creature that is part human, part fish and part bird in a sense, like the image of the sea goat Capricorn, has the ability to plumb the depths and scale the heights.
