i noticed on the bottom of my personal checks, it contains my bank account number and routing number. ive seen many websites, like my credit card website for example, that use just these two pieces of information to draw money from my bank account. because of this, when i give somebody a check, does that mean they'll be able to access money from my bank account?

Yes, your check info is just like your credit card info, no password needed, all they need is a copy of the numbers and they can rip you blind and empty.

BUT, for that reason there is insurance and everything leaves a trace, if you didn't write the check the money can come back, and if credit cards are fraudulently charged, you can chargeback, even so, BE CAREFUL, it's more trouble just thinking about it, so best to keep it safe.

Yes. This is a clear and present danger (all the info they could want is right there...name, address, phone, sometimes DL#, routing, account, ect). It is why companies started doing online payments and such because thieves were stealing peoples outgoing mail and stealing the account information on it. This is why if you don't know the person you are writing the check to you should go to your bank and buy a money order or cashiers check...then there is no info to steal.

Unfourtonatlely until checks become obsolite there isn't a way to combat the situation. Maybe someday there will be microchips in checks that the Fed can read, but even then thieves would come up with a way to get the information from that too. Until then, just write your checks smartly.

SCH is confused. The ONLY method of payment that does not provide enough information to fraudulently access your account is CASH. Electronic payments include MORE information than checks.

They can. Then again a lot of merchants have your debit/credit card number and expiration date too.

any legit business you don't have to worry about, they are in it for a profit selling goods, not stealing money. plus entrepreneurs love to serve people.
