It seems to me that their is a schism in our country between the conservative right and the liberal left. We are at each others throats all the time, we can't agree at all on the same issues, and we seek to dominate and control the other all the time. Will this behavior eventually lead to our country splitting into two, and if this happens, what will be the factor that will crack the dam?

We won't split into two countries like in the civil war but we already have divided ourselves on a number of issues. Thats why I am really careful on what subject I talk about in company with whom I am not familiar.

I doubt it. You're right, though, the divide is huge, and big-shots citing the "culture war" aren't making it any better. And let's not forget, dividing us was a key part of Karl Rove's strategy.

People seem to care more about which side they and the other guy belong to rather than what's right and wrong. Red and Blue have themselves become right and wrong for too many people. It's sickening, and you can feel it in the air at times.

The divide is plain as day on a map as well. Let us not forget either that not long ago, the positions were reversed -- the South went Democrat, and the North went Republican. Cultural issues, morality, and religion have played a big part in the reversal and deepening of the divide.

It's plain as day here also, though it's a bit exaggerated, since the anonymity and the soapbox Yahoo Answers provides tends to attract some nut-jobs from either side.

The two party system has to go, for one. I'd like to see a parliamentary system more like England's, where the president would have to directly face the House. Hold his feet to the fire, and maybe it'll be so entertaining (reality TV), people might actually pay attention and become informed citizens.

I don't think our Nation will ever be divided-in-two, but
there is a great chasm in politics between Democrats
and Republicans. I guess we keep on having elections
and we try to unite around whomever wins. Most citizens
are decent, hard-working, family-loving, caring, and honest
people which makes the U.S. a great place to live, work,
and raise a family. We have so much beauty in this land
that we can vacation to and ingest it's majesty. I love it here
and wouldn't think of moving anywhere else in the world.
They all have their own problems...many much worse than
ours. If the media would butt-out, the rest of us might just
learn to get along or disagree without being disagreeable.
God Bless America, land that I love.

I think it is time for a return to civility. This nation has always existed with diverse political thought, yet civil discourse has generally prevented war, if you don't count some duels in Congress a very long time ago...

Everyone seems to want to fix the US. What if we sat back and considered all of the things that we take for granted which don't need fixing (and are worth fighting to protect)?! And just for a moment looked around at the rest of the world. And maybe we could still count our blessings.

i'm hoping i live long enough to see this happen but i don't want either side on my side of the country and i know quite a few people who feel the same way so maybe it will have to be a 3 way split.

People need to shut off the TV and quit letting the hate mongers divide us. Divided we fall... I hope the factor is the truth, as it is, not as we are told it is. It would then take time for people to sort it through but then we would unite.

I see a strong movement away from the two party system and toward a return to the Constitution.

We're only at each others throats in political discussions on and off of Y!A. Politics aside, I love conservatives! ;)

Besides, dissension is healthy. It makes us stronger.

Let's hope it does. That way the liberals can have fun flailing around with their socialist society with 50% unemployment rates, and we'll finally be rid of the excess baggage.
