Transponders (Mode-2, Mode-C, Mode-S) transmit an aircrafts heading, speed, altitude, and ident. This info is requested by the ground based Beacon Interrogator commonly referred to as the Secondary Radar (not really a radar).
Primary Radar (ASR-8/9/ or 11) paint a target with a 1 microsecond pulse and awaits the return of the signal. A primary Radar *** DOES NOT *** require a transponder to track a target. Primary radars are often paired with Secondary Radars -aka- Transponder Beacon Interrogators. The ASR-9/ and 11 are also Doppler Radars, which use phase detection for higher resolution, which then allows Air Traffic to decrease aircraft separation. They see anything moving to include six levels of weather.

The initial point (1st post) was planes DID actually hit the Pentagon and also crash in Penn. Subsequent posts ballooned from there.

They don't require them to be on to see them on radar. But when there's a thousand blips on the screen it's easier if you have a transponder to track a plane. To the best of my knowledge at least. I watched the 9/11 commission report on the History Channel the other day, and that's what I took away from it.
Glad to see you're not falling to the dark side of conspiracies. I was getting scared there Chi Guy. You and I disagree a lot, but we always stood together bumping conspiracy guesses. I won't even dignify them as theories anymore.

Xponders don't transmit heading and ident is a specific pilot activated function. Transponders only respond to the interrigator the squawk code, altitude and strengthen position returns. Shut off the transponder and the a/c could easily vanish from the scope due to lack of return strength which is why coast track is a function of ATC computers. Secondary capability isn't necessary to track a target, but since cars, buildings and birds aren't transponder equiped, it sure helps identify the mode c / s or what have you return as an airplane.

But my systems can detect your Doppler Radar and I can fly a parallel course at the correct speed to be invisible to your system.
My demolition engineers wear their stealth suits derived from alien technology recovered from Roswell and plant explosives in the WTC over a 2-month period without anyone noticing the work going on as they drill into the supports.
My mind control keeps any of these operatives from ever coming forward.

They only squawk to identify the aircraft. The terrorist apparently knew enough to know to shut them off. They also dropped down to make it more difficult for the radars to find them. It didn't make them invisible but it made the towers uncertain who they were and also much more difficult to track.

Well anybody who has investigated 9/11 will know that they were confused because of all the training exercises and the fact that Dick Cheney was in charge. It was his job to make sure those planes hit the buildings.
