generally speaking, "a couple" means two (2). A "few" always refers to more than two.
A few people were milling around the market could mean anywhere from 3 to maybe 5.
After that I think you're referring to groups and mobs!! :O))

Good golly miss molly! A couple of what? A couple of dozen is 24, a couple of gross is 288. A few might be 2 or three, or it might be 100's ( a few grains of sand on a beach ????)...I suspect that these are relative terms, aren't they? Neither you nor I can put a finite number to a vague description, and neither can anyone else. But then, I wax philosophical now and then :-) ( or is that "wax on....wax off...." ?)

A "few" is like saying, it's as far as a "see" a "see" is as far as one can "see" so, that means a "few see's" is a considerable distance, where as a "couple" of "see's" is a lot shorter.
It's like saying "Jack hooked the watchamacallit to the dohicky so they could take the thngamajig to the youknow, it was only a see away."
Now, do you understand what a "see" is? it's like a "few" but, not exactly.
