His best performance was 'Big'... I also liked him in 'Saving Private Ryan' and his voice work for 'Toy Story' and its sequel.

He has had so many that were so good, I don't know that I could pick one.
Toy Story
The Green Mile
Big
Cast Away
Forrest Gump
That Thing You Do
Apollo 13
Road to Perdition
The Terminal
The thing that's interesting when you look at his filmography, there is a definate line between goofball comedies and much better performances that started with Big. But he's one of a handful of actors I would watch every time out just because he's in the movie.

SPLASH
At this point, he had not yet become dreadfully egotistical, considering himself an ACTOR instead of a regular actor. I first saw Tom Hanks in "Bosom Buddies" then in the film "He Knows You're Alone". So, I was willing to watch his films. I very much enjoyed "Splash", in which he was quite natural, relaxed, sweet and funny. Then, he was in a string of fairly stinky films. He made a sort of comeback with "Big", which was a nice film. Starting with "A League of Their Own", I began disliking him, but I kept trying to watch his films.
After "Philadelphia", he was no longer the regular guy I started out liking. To me, this showed in his films. The acting became very self-conscious. I became completely disenchanted with the man, not even watching such films as "Saving Private Ryan." I think "Forrest Gump" was the last straw. Has anyone seen "Buford's Beach Bunnies" starring Jim Hanks~Tom's brother? I've seen clips of this raunchy comedy, and it certainly looks as if Tom lifted the country bumpkin routine from his brother's performance.
I like early Tom Hanks only. He'll have to change a lot before I like him again.
Michael Keaton is another one that went through this change from regular actor to self-important ACTOR (to be said as one draws one's self up to full height and delivers with a bold, stage-actor voice). Watch for this syndrome! It can happen at any time!
I apologize if this distressed any fans, but I had to separate the "two Toms"~the likable one from the person he has become.

My faves are Toy Story and Toy Story 2 - I realize its just his voice but I think he makes Woody really come alive - I mean you actually forget that it is a cartoon!!!
I will say I thought Forrest Gump was SERIOUSLY overrated!!! I mean essentially its a guy telling a story while waiting for a bus! Now I might be bias because by the time I saw it I had already heard (or saw on t-shirts) most of the good quotes so I was almost burnt out on it already but it still irked me to see that movie listed so many times in answer to this question.

Obviously Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, and Apollo 13. But I can't believe nobody mentioned Turner and Hooch.

Apollo 13 was my favorite. I thought Tom Hanks did an excellent job of showing all the emotions involved in a situation like that.
