I probably wouldn't put Steve Young that high. He was great (after all he did make it to the hall) but not that great. For me, it's a toss up between Elway, Marino, and Montana. All three were great quarterbacks. Marino had all those records. Elway was second when he retired in a number of those records, plus the comebacks and the 2 Super Bowl wins. Montana also had many comebacks plus 4 Super Bowl rings.
You could say that Peyton Manning will eventually be the best, especially on the pace he's at and if he wins another Super Bowl (but that's eventually). And you can't go wrong with Johnny Unitas, either.

TH has it right -- it's Unitas, Montana and Manning.
Manning will soon eat up all the statistical records, Montana and Unitas have winning histories that speak for themselves.
Sure, Elway's comebacks were impressive, but Unitas basically INVENTED the two-minute drill, and used it to lead the Baltimore Colts to victory in what is still called "The Greatest Game Ever Played," the 1958 NFL Championship overtime game against the Giants.

Your three are great, but none are in the top 2. I'm shocked how few mention Joe Montana and more shocked even fewer mention Johnny Unitas. These two are far better than any others and Manning may surpass the three above. Check Montana's Super Bowl stats. Plus, you knew, without a doubt, if he had the chance to beat you he would. The Niners weren't behind in the 4th quarter all that often, maybe you could look at the percentage of times they overcame a deficit vs how many times they didn't.

1. Bernie Kosar
2. Vinnie Testaverde
3. Ryan Leaf
.....
Ok, for real now...
1. Dan Marino
2. Joe Montana or John Elway
3. John Elway or Joe Montana...you could exchange these two I guess, but the reason I say Marino is because he was the most "handicapped" of them all and still was a TD throwing machine. He was a rare QB that didn't have to have the big name recievers, I just would've liked to see him win at least one SB. Pretty soon, Brett Favre will be among that group, and Peyton Manning as well, and probably Tom Brady a little while after.

Why do people ask this question over and over?
Anyway, none of these lists are any good unless the question is "Who is the best NFL quarterback in your lifetime?"
The best quarterback ever was Otto Graham. And that's not just me talking, most NFL historians will tell you the same thing. Joe Montana's 4 SB rings pale in comparison to Graham's 10 championship games in 10 years, and 7 championship wins. That's a record that will not be broken. Ever.

got a better set of stats for you.......who won the most SB rings as a starter? (pretty numbers dont matter if you dont win)
Joe Montana-4
Terry Bradshaw-4
Tom Brady-3 (of course...they may have cheated)
John Elway-2
Steve Young-1 (yes he had more....but he only started and played for 1)
Dan Marino-0
Now, by that set of stats.....who is the greatest QB ever?
(Hint.....he's named after a huge, mostly undeveloped state, which is mostly owned by Ted Turner) Everyone else is second best.
