I believe that poetry has the ability to change minds and change lives, all for the better. A few encouraging words have done wonders for those who spent most of their life struggling to find happiness, love, or piece of mind. Without poetry, many people would be lost trying to understand certain things about people and about life in general. Poetry has the power to make us all better people, either if we chose to write it or spend time reading/listening to it. If I didn't have my love of poetry, I would not be able to express my feelings on anything, including myself. I realize it is the talent that is the key to my success, and for that I am grateful.

Nothing will ever change the joy and happiness, amongst other things, that poetry has brought to this world. It is a gift and it should always be appreciated. It is a life changer, and a tool for success. No matter how much the world changes, it will never change the power of poetry.

Poetry In The Modern World

Because all throughout elementary school we were forced to write and read poetry, which was as boring as heck, and usually dealt with philosophy and no elementary school kid gave a crap about it! And if you tried to say you hated poetry, the teacher would lecture you all about how wrong and dumb you were, and how great a thing poetry was. I remember every teacher spending a week to a month all on poetry, and I hated it, because I couldn't write a story, it's repetitive, stupid, and half the time I didn't even know what I was saying. By the time I got to 5th grade, everyone was so amazing at poetry that I'm never impressed by it anymore, unless it had some clever rhyming scheme or hidden symbols that not just anyone could think of.

If they are good, lyrics are poetry, and therefore poetry does have an impact on our lives.

Good poetry can stir the emotions, and sway logic.

You are probably too young to remember the Anti-Vietnam War Protest Movement, but I believe that the movement would not have been half so effective without some of the great songs associated with that movement.

I am also of the opinion that the current anti-war movement will not gain strength with strident bellowing, and shrill screeches of that damned Shehan woman. But if well known singers and songwriters start writing and singing anti-war songs that catch the public's imagination, things might turn around.

Poetry is important because it takes ideas and emotions and feelings that cannot be expressed any other way and expresses them with imagery. This imagery can say many different things to many different people, but once the word has gone out, it will stay with those people like a seed.
That is why poets are so powerful that dictators put them in prison==look at Anna Akhmatova. Poetry will be one force that will help to bring peace to the world. Look at how the effect of Sam Hamill when he refused to read at the White House unless he could read a poem against the war. I thought Mrs. Bush had cancelled the whole thing, but apparently by the Web site, he declined. Short History of Poets Against War

In late January 2003, in response to an invitation to a symposium by Laura Bush to celebrate "Poetry and the American Voice," Sam Hamill declined; a longtime pacifist, he could not in good faith visit the White House following the recent news of George W. Bush's plan for a unilateral "Shock and Awe" attack on Iraq. Instead, he asked about 50 fellow poets to "reconstitute a Poets Against the War movement like the one organized to speak out against the war in Vietnam...to speak up for the conscience of our country and lend your names to our petition against this war” by submitting poems of protest that he would send to the White House. When 1,500 poets responded within four days, this web site was created as a means of handling the enormous, unexpected response.

Since then, the "accidental groundswell" grew to include poets from around the world. There are presently more than 20,000 poems in this, the largest poetry anthology ever published. Poems from Poets Against War have been presented in person, by invitation, to several representatives of the U.S. Congress; many of them have since been introduced into the Congressional Record.

Poetry is basically like songs that you hear everyday. They are people's innermost thoughts and feelings expressed in a unique way.I say it plays a big part in the modern world today.

Poetry has been considered in everything. From ancient scripts to scripture.......... it is the greatest show, expression of emotion and life beyond mere physics. We should consider it's almost infinite cast; from music to painting, from simple wordplay to physical expression; poetry can be the way one talks or even walks......... the way one feels and/ or lives. Poetry is even implemented by God! One could even say the very Earth itself is a form of heavenly poetry.........consider the beauty there of.........the trees and the seas, the sun and moon in the firmament of heaven.......... poetry is everything.

Like actual poetry? To be honest, very little.

However, I think song lyrics have the ability to influence the public, especially the young. If the lyrics have a message in them, the public will listen to it. I think it's interesting when my favorite artists voice their opinions in verse. "Jesus Walks" Kenye West

Poetry is the truest expression of our deepest emotion, one that mere words alone can not portray.
