well... propaganda usually goes beyond persuading someone to your opinion...

it's usually thought of as manipulating people, usually emotionally ... more than simply stating your opinion...

Well, the answer is yes and no.

Strictly speaking, propaganda is simply public communications, regardless of media, which are intended to persuade--but (except for manipulative purposes) are one-sided (biased). Not necessarily untruthful, though.

But--in practice, the term is usually used to refer to such material which goes further--that is either untruthful, or which streches or distorts what is said to the point that it can be considered misrepresentation, at best.

And--its onne of those terms tha tis used--in the latter sense--simpply to discredit any statements made by those "on the other side"--the idea being if you can label the other guy's statements as "propaganda" in the minds of listeners, it will discredit your opponents statements, whether they are true or not. This is often a deleberate ploy--a form of propaganda in itself! At the same time--labeling as "mere propaganda" an opponents statements which in fact are misrepresentations or lies--while, in descrediting your opponet (and hence serving as your own propaganda) is also simply a statement of the facts.

Sorry for the twists and turns--The point is that, whether what one side is right or wrong, speaking truth or lies--public statements designed to convince listeners you are the "good guy" and your opponent is the "bad guy" are propaganda-whether true or not--the goal is to convince the audience what YOU say is the truth.

Nothing wrong in trying to explain your point of view. If you need to lie expect people to know enough to disagree.

if you are right and the facts are on your side, you don't need propaganda.

It's wrong when you don't back it up with facts, and you instead back it up with FEAR and LIES...
