I heard that he did, during the 1978 season, before his 44-game hitting streak, but I find that improbable, since he was primarily a singles and doubles hitter--didn't he hit something like 280 HR in his career?

Why yes he did, as noted.

Rose's 3 HR game came on 29-April-1978 against the Mets at Shea. Box: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1978/B04290NYN1978.htm

His 44-game hit streak came later in the season, beginning 14-June against the Cubs, ending 31-July in Atlanta, and broken by the Braves the next night.

Rose hit 160 homers in his major league career.

Most improbable 3 HR game? I'd go with Freddie Patek's, who went yard three times on 20-June-1980 in Fenway as the Royals wrecked the Red Sox, 20-2. It was the only multi-home run game of his career, and he hit a grand total of 41.

Yes Pete Rose did hit 3 HRS in a game this happened April 29,1978 against the New York Mets.

Each home run was hit off a different pitcher- Nino Espinosa (solo), Mardie Cornejo (2 run HR), and Butch Metzger (solo).

He also had 4 games where he hit 2 HRS.

how is that improbable?

Pat Seerey hit 4 HR in one game but only had 86 career homeruns

I don't think Pete Rose hit 3 HR in one game over that span, but it's not improbable

@ Errik: Yes, I remember watching that on NBC's Game of the Week. (I didn't need the Internet; I relied on my memory, but I wasn't sure whether it was the last Saturday of April of 1978, or the first Saturday in May of that year. And, I also remember the 29th of April falling on a Saturday, (I played Little League, but the game was on Sunday).

I saw that game it was on NBC I believe. But here's a Trivia pop Quiz. Did he hit them all from one side of the plate?
