Most don't really show signs at that age. However, there are some signs of autism that show up starting at birth. Not making eye contact, not smiling, has a real resentment of touching, not responding to his/her name, not pointing, and delayed speech can all be signs. Also, repetitive movements such as slamming a spoon on the floor over and over again. However, most babies go through that stage, so it isn't as reliable as some of the others.
If you have any concerns, them please bring them up to your doctor. They will be able to examine your child. Chances are, everything is normal, but it's better to be safe then sorry. Early treatment and therapy makes a world a difference.

Autism is marked by impaired social interaction and communciation skills, as well as restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. It involves delays or abnormal functioning in social interaction, language and/or imaginative play.

By definition, the onset of Autistic Disorder is prior to age three. In some instances, parents report that they have been worried about the child since birth or shortly afterward because of the child's lack of interest in social interaction. Manifestations of the disorder in infancy are more subtle and difficult to define than those seen after age two.

I work with children with autism, and it's around 12 months that we start to see signs like lack of eye contact, and not pointing. At that young age though we usually just monitor the child until they get a little older, since they are too young to diagnose at that age. Most children I work with were diagnosed around age 2, because parents were concerned about language. The youngest I have seen a child get diagnosed is 18 months. The earlier the better, because early intervention is important.

You can't usually tell unless it is a severe case. Dr's won't even diagnose until 3 years old because they have to watch for all the signs so they don't misdiagnose. At 8 months old a baby may show signs of autism without really being autistic.
