My personal favorite is James Madison. "Little Jemmy" as he was called kept the notes to the Constitutional Convention. He was enormously talented as a writer, extremely intelligent and brave (read about his service in the War of 1812). Though many consider him an acolyte of Jefferson's, he was horrified by Jefferson's continued ownership of slaves and somewhat bemused by Jefferson's affectations (Jefferson pretended to be shy and unambitious, but was really neither and could be quite vicious behind the scenes).

The one who was saying that separation from England was the only viable option (when the others were still trying to remain with England) was Thomas Paine. He wrote much of what went into the Declaration of Independence and defined what would become the structure of government within the Constitution long before any of the others.

The best founding father is John Adams! Though Jefferson wrote the Declaration, Adams argued for it in front of Congress. Adams was a congressman, diplomat, and president. While Washington was getting rich off of the American Revolution, Adams was accepting his meager salary as a congressman in lieu of his law practice. While Jefferson was spiraling into debt, Adams was responsibly planning for his future, his family's future, and the country's future.

Thomas Jefferson. He wrote the Declaration of Independence and under his Presidency he doubled the size of the nation among other good things.

Thomas Jefferson was the most brilliant of the founding fathers. You may want to research it yourself for your school project.

George Washington because he willingly gave up his power to the next president. No one else had ever done that. It validated the new country's experiment in government.
