It is due to the difference between the air and water temperature is less at night than during the heat of the day.

The shock of getting into water much different than the air temperature is interpreted by our mind as being more extreme than if the the air and water temperature is closer together even though the water temperature remains the same.

My guess would be that the temperature of the air usually drops at night, so the water really isn't warmer, it just seems that way because the air cools faster than the water does.

If you were to jump in 65 degree water and it was 90 degrees outside, you would probably say it was freezing. But if it were 30 degrees outside, you would probably say it was warm. Just a matter of perception.

Hope this helps! :-)

The fact that water suface is warmer at night is due to the following reasons:-
(1)The abundance of water vapour over a water surface exercises a blanketing influence by absorbing the out going radiation(Water vapour is a powerful absorber of terrestial radiation) and re-radiating some of it back to the water surface.
(2)The specific heat of water is more than that of soil(land )So water takes more time to get heated and more time to release the heat. But the land(being a good absorber of heat) gets heated quickly in the day and gives out the heat quickly in the night.
(3)Moreover ,heat penetrates to a considerable depth in water and maintains the heat for a long time in the night unlike the land where the heat penetrates only a few feet thereby easily getting colder in the night.

At night, the clouds gater more over bodies of water because of tidal gravitational pull and sea breeze. Clouds keep in warm air better, as you probably know, as opposed to no clouds. Also, it could just be that the air feels cooler at night because of the darkness.

Apparantly you have not been in Lake Michigan after the sun starts going down? It's just the opposite.

I think it's b/c the heat from the day that's trapped in water stays longer. (it's called sea breeze & land breeze?)

It's just that the air is cooler.
