what the heck does "a fingertip dilated" mean???

today i made 37wks5days! yay! i have been havin so many darn braxton hicks contractions. unfortunately they r just terribly tight and constant, but not painful enuff for me to think im n labor... today @ my doc appt i requested to have my cervix checked and was told that my daughter's head is really low and im dilated to a finger tip. what the heck does this mean? is there a possibility that labor is close? i know i shoulda asked the doc this but i was just so ecstatic to hear that my baby's head is low that i kinda blocked some things out. also, if i have sex do u guys think it should bring labor on since her head is so low?

A fingertip dilated isnt anything, if it was 1 cm the doc would have said that...just so you know. With the baby being so low, I wouldnt recommend having sex, unless you ask your doc about it first, normally sex is fine during all stages of pregnancy but with the head being low it might not be a good idea. Try walking, it could bring on labor, if you are in any kind of prenatal exercise class such as yoga, that might help to get you relaxed which might help your body to start the laboring process. Hopefully by walking, you will be more dilated at your visit next week!

A fingertip is about 1 cm so not much. Dilation can occur over many weeks before you actually go into labor and most women dilate 1 or 2 cm way before real labor actually starts. But you are close - almost 38 weeks!

All those Braxton Hicks contractions are good and they are toning your uterus for labor. It's good to practice through these early contractions so you'll be better prepared for the "real ones."

A fingertip dilated is 1 cm. Your doctor should have told you this as he/she should be checking your cervix at every visit from about 36 wks on automatically. It doesn't necessarily mean that labor is going to be any time soon. You can be dilated for a month and not have the baby. It is still always good to hear because that means that your body is preparing for childbirth and that you are progressing well, meaning a better chance for a naturally occuring labor (as opposed to having meds to start labor). A fingertip is about a centimeter. The fact that the baby's head is low is good! Sex might kickstart things but when the times right it'll happen!

when you are 10 cms its like 5 fingers...so a fingertip would be 1-2 cms. i was 3 cms for almost 4-5 weeks. and my babies head was engaged and very low for 3...i was a week late. just relax and it will come when its ready what you are experiancingis false labour...it started at week 36 but with pain for me congrats

It means you are a tinsy bit dilated, not fully closed, but not enough to say you are 1cm dilated. No one can tell you how close you are to going into labour, but baby will benefit from another week before being evicted!

not quite enough to call it a cm. i know someone who is due in a couple of days and has been 3 cm dialated for weeks now. some people swear by having sex. never worked for me and i have 3 kids.

i think of it incredibly is like the front foyer for hell. there continues to be some air-conditioning, and a receptionist, yet it incredibly is an extremely long wait, no bogs, and intensely boring magazines.
