Jeter may just end up at ss like Ozzie Smith and Omar Vizquel, but I could possibly see a partial shift to first/DH as his career winds down. I don't think that it would be a complete change of position because Jeters bat doesn't have the pop to justify him being a full-time 1st baseman or DH in today's game. I say this because I'm sure that he will retire as a Yankee, and the Yankees will always spend enough to have a legit HR guy at first. Now if Derek ends up somewhere else(highly unlikely), that might happen-Vidro DHs for Seattle-I just cant see him playing full time1st base/DH with the Yankees.

That's an interesting question. I'm trying to recall any shortstops late in their careers moving to another position. Can't think of any at the moment. It would seem logical that if his range is diminished he could move to third base. However I think Jeter will know when it's time to hang it up. Fortunately that's a long time from now. My guess is that he will retire as a shortstop.

I am amazed that a Red Sox fan has not answered this yet with a sexual reference...

If he stays in the AL, he may end up as a DH. Long fielding careers can mess with the legs quite a bit, and in his very last season he may see more games in a DH role, even though I don't think he will ever go an entire season without a role on the field. (shortstop or third)

That's a great question. I asked it on another "sports" board and didn't get any good answers.

He losing a lot of range at SS. Arod is at 3rd for now. He's got too much talent to waste at first. I wonder if he will switch to the outfield at some point. He may have a good enough arm and enough speed to play left field. Doesn't need the same kind of range as he's lost at SS.

To answer "the Mick 7": Cal Ripken moved to 3B. IF A-Rod doesn't opt out or signs an extension, Derek won't be able to move to 3B if he loses a step. I think DJ will end up playing first base and DH'ng when he gets older....but I am thinking that will be like when he's 40 or so!!

The others who guess that he will finish at 3rd or 1st or DH may be right, but he will always be remembered as a shortstop and will certainly be first ballot HOF. And, yes, I am a Red Sox fan.

short stop, of course.

Not even A-Rod, an excellent short stop and probably the best infielder ever, could move Jeter away from that position.

He will be one of the short stops of this time that were supposed to be elites, to actually finish at short stop. he is not suited for anywhere else and i dont see the yankees changing that.
