Well it probably doesn't predate the penny.
I've never heard of that. God is on record as NOT using money to send messages, so it would have to be the devil, whose money-minded.
God mocks money in the book of Daniel's writing on the wall.

There are no records that I can find of such a myth. There is a superstition that a penny found with Honest Abe's face smiling at you is good luck if picked up. However to pick up a penny with Abe face down will bring bad luck. (USA)

It's a superstition. And it just means good luck. I think.... I'm not really an expert on stuff like that.
