Would you prefer a trip to a country with places out-of-the-book or merely those found in travel guides?

My ideal trip is to visit someone who lives there. One time my mom and I went to visit my uncle when he was living in England and it was great.

Although there is a feeling of safety from travel guides, I feel a greater sense of understanding and involvement if I slide into the local's world and check things out on their level.
