Sorry, but ALL the others are wrong as Général de Gaulle was president from 1944- 1946 and 1959- 1969...
You re looking for Marshal Philippe Pétain:
He became a war hero during WW1 (!) beating the German Army in Verdun.
Later on, during WW2, he was the president of (Vichy-) France from 1940- 1944.

Yes, General Charles De Gaulle.
After the Fall of Paris, he retreat to England. And came back to France during the D-Day. He inform all marquis (French Guerrillas) that let's liberate France.

that would be general charles de gaulle. he was the leader of the provisionary government of france in exile during ww2. he had the honor of leading the french soldiers into paris through the champs elyses during d-day. immediately after the war he was elected by popular majority to be the first president of france.

Many leaders around and just after that time would be considered atheists - including some of our own (Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, John Adams, and Thomas Paine, just to name a few). And of course he loved being in command, he was a short man (even for his time) obsessed with being revered. His lack of belief in a deity was not what made him that way. good 'ol charles degaulle although i'm not sure of the spelling of his name. he was MR FRANCE, inside and out! he modeled his govt and personal choices after another famous french general, napoleon. can't go wrong. the best choice france ever made.
