I work at in a company in the UK. I've built up six weeks (30 working days) holiday that I 'should' take before the end of the calender year. My company is asking that I take only 20 working days and also stipulating when I take these, then carry over 10 days into the next year. Is this legal? Do I have the 'reasonable' right to demand these holidays when I want before the year ends? Can I argue that I want all 30 days before the end of the year?

At present, they're ignoring all my questions or requests for time off and simply don't appear to want to give me an official answer.

Ideas?

I want to take four weeks in total (trying to be reasonable about it because they have a very big project on the the go) and have given them two set of dates to take these days - they have complained about both sets; first I gave them a couple of weeks off and then days spread out, then I tried the other option of days spread out over long weekends......both options rejected.

Now I'm just thinking of telling them and taking it whether they agree or not, hence the question!

I'm only attempting to take 20 of the 30 days off and come to an agreement with my employer about the other two weeks.

My question is about the legality in the UK of whether they HAVE to give me the time off.

If you were the employer here, would you want the person in your job to be gone for 6 weeks? Sure your earned the time, but once the amount becomes so large it is a problem for the company to fill your position while you are gone. Sure they would like to make as convenient for the company as possible - but if you have plans or a trip or such they would probably understand. You can request the time off - they can refuse or grant, but you question sounds a little like you just want to be obstinate. Some companies have a use it or lose it policy that only allows you to carry x amount of vacation days on the books before they expire.

WOW , sounds like a maquiadora in a 3rd world country . ( OK spelling of the Mexican factory not quite right I'm sure )

Write a letter to your boss , indicating the days you will be taking off ( all 30 ) and unless you hear to the contrary within 7 days , you will be booking your flight to Aruba for that time period .

Hope your work performance makes you an indispensable person ( won't be terminated) .

I'm sure there are laws governing labour-management relations over there, too. Contact the nearest office of whichever department would handle that.
