First -- glad you asked about WHERE to go... a lot of folks use unreliable sources for these sorts of questions.

A couple of already listed one of THE best web sites for accurate name meanings -- one which has clearly taken some care to try to get it right, and give you as much good information as it can. The FIRST place to go on th web for questions about first names is behindthenames.com. (There are some other good ones, and some are even better for the things they cover, but this is has the broadest solid site.)

Another good source for "origins of words" generally --which includes some names ("Alexander" among them)-- is the online etymology dictionary (etymonline.com). It happens to have a slightly better (fuller and more precise) explanation in this case.

(On the other hand, I do NOT recommend the typical "baby name" web sites or books. They compile their information from MANY different sources, some reliable, some very poor. They also sometimes do not give enough detail to show exactly how the name got to its present form, how the 'pieces' of the name work...)

___________________________

Those who used behindthename.com came FAIRLY close in their explanation... but not exactly.

"Alexandria" does not exactly MEAN "CITY of Alexander" (which would be "Alexandropolis" in Greek). It is a FEMININE form of the name "Alexander", which was then USED to name that Egyptian city.

As for "Alexander" -- it's original Greek form was "Alexandros", which more literally means "defender (protector) OF man".

The emphasis would have been a military one, rather understandable when you recall that his father was the great general, Philip of Macedon (expressing his hopes for his son). Note that the last part, "andros", is the "genitive form" of the noun "man, male", and so meaning "OF man". You might recognize this same root word in our word "android".

(Incidentally, "defender of mankind" is not precisely right. At least not in the usual sense of "mankind", which refers to ALL people/human beings [cf. 'humankind']. The Greek equivalent for THAT is "anthropos" [as in "anthroplogy" -- 'study of man{kind}']. "Aner/andros" means "man" in the specific sense of "male". Note that the name first had a MILITARY sense... suggesting someone who protected men (other warriors, who would have been male!) in battle. Obviously, someone who did a good job at this WAS an effective defender of his whole people, so that general idea isn't so very far off.)

By the way, another nice feature of behindthename.com is the listing of "related names", esp. names that were adapted from the same original name into various languages. In this case you'll find things from "Alisdair" (Scottish) to "Sandra" (Italian) to "Sasha" (Russian).

Although the name Alexandria creates executive ambitions, we emphasize that it causes a materialistic approach that frustrates higher humanitarian qualities.

This name, when combined with the last name, can frustrate happiness, contentment, and success, as well as cause health weaknesses in the reproductive organs.

Your name of Alexandria causes you to place considerable importance upon the material aspect of life.

You have an eye for quality, desiring always the very best that money can buy, and you are not content with anything that is second best.

You are quick to size up others, and this appraisal is based upon their physical appearance, their clothes, and whether they have achieved material success and the standards of quality that you have set in your own mind.

You have a keen business sense, knowing a lucrative proposition when it is presented, and it is likely others would come to you for business counsel.

Beautiful name. A friend just decided to name her baby girl Alexandria.

Here's what we found in the baby name book we picked up at the grocery store checkout, of all places:

Alexandria
Origin: Greek
Meaning: Feminine of Alexander. Defender of mankind.

also:

Origin: English
Meaning: Variant of Alexandra: A feminine form of Alexander meaning defender of men, used in Britain since early 13th century; it became popular after the marriage of the 1863 marriage of future King Edward VII to Princess Alexandra of Denmark.

Alexandria is also listed as 'City of Alexander.'

It's derived from the Hebrew name Havvah (also Chavva, Hawwa), which comes from an old Semitic verb meaning "to live." Thus the name came be interpreted as "living" or possibly "living female," since it has typical feminine marking. Eva is a Greco-Latin pronunciation of the original Hebrew. If Eva is short for Evangeline, it comes from Greek, meaning "good news/message," of which "gospel" is the English (Germanic) translation.
