The path of total eclipse is quite narrow. If you move away from that path the full eclipse becomes a partial eclipse which would still be visible but decreasing the further away you move from the line of totality. I'm not sure on distances but guessing the path of totality to be 50-100 miles wide if that. Compare this to standing behind a ball lit by a flashlight. The entire ball will be shaded but as soon as you move a little to the side it becomes only partially shaded. If ever you have a chance to go to watch a full solar eclipse take the time to do so. They are the most magnificent site to behold.

A dramatic celestial phenomenon in which light from the Sun is blocked from the Earth by the Moon. In order for this to occur, the Earth, Moon, and Sun must be in a line in that order, which means that the phase of the Moon must be new. The Moon's shadow sweeps across the Earth's surface as the Moon moves over the face of the Sun. Totality occurs when the Sun is completely blocked by the Moon. The darkest part of the shadow is called the umbra, and it is surrounded by an area of partial shadow called the penumbra. Because the Moon's shadow stretches from the Moon to the Earth in a cone shape, only a small fraction of the Earth's surface experiences the eclipse. The solar eclipse alignment of Earth, Moon and Sun does not occur every month, because the Moon's orbit is tilted five degrees from a plane containing the Earth and Sun, so the Moon's shadow usually passes above or below the Earth.
And can be seen throughout the world.

A total solar eclipse is only visible from a long narrow strip about 100 miles wide, more or less, but the strip can be as long as half way around the world, which could cross many countries, but only a 100 mile wide stripe across those countries. Outside that narrow strip, a partial eclipse can be seen for several thousand miles.
