To: I love shopping....hope you are just kidding...can't imagine how I could hurt you...but if I ever did, I am very sorry.

The great thing about this question is that when answering, one often releases emotional pain in the telling of it...

You're a fat cow. That would hurt me.

I don't love you anymore, and I want a divorce. I've been shagging your sister/mom/best friend. Even worse.

Ummmm... I don't want you to be my mommy anymore. That would really hurt me.

How're those?

From some of the answers, I can comprehend how some are "hurt." But, please, please try to remember the "words" were spoken by ignorant, mean-spirited people who couldn't care less about YOUR feelings.
The question is then: Why "care" about them to the extent that you let them hurt you? I know this seems hokey, but "consider the source" is so very applicable. I understand how strong emotions are, but--logically--you needn't let them make you feel one single negative moment.
Another phrase I like is: "Water off a duck's back." I don't "allow" words to hurt me. I candidly admit that I've come to the defense of sensitive people when they're being insulted, & I also try to help them realize it simply isn't worth it.

To be called a C U N T. That is one of the most unintelligent words that people can let roll from their lips. They sound stupid saying it as does the delivery to the recipient.

I hate that word!

Hi Goldberry,
There can also be hurt in the silences. I've done all I can to make my future daughter-in-law feel welcome in our family but for some reason she keeps pushing me away. She has blatantly lied and then apologised as if she really meant it. Then as soon as I accepted her apology, she has gone silent and sulky on me again. In the silence I read she doesn't really want to know me; the apology was probably just to please my son. All I want is his happiness but he's abroad at the moment, she's in Ireland and her silence speaks volumes.

words harm plenty greater desirable than sticks and stones, fantastically whilst they arrive out of the mouths of one's infants! I consistently concept the asserting ended with words to result that "words reason plenty greater soreness than sticks and stones."

you are fat and ugly.

And for the past 10 years I have had anorexia, bulimia, been at a bmi of 14, relapsed twice.

So then I get to a "sensible" weight (bmi 20, 9 stone and 5'8",) then someone calls me fat.

the odd, critical word, spoken at a time when i am sensitive
as life goes on, i have changed, from being sensitive due to lack of feeling great about myself, or secure in who i am and what i am,,,, to sensitive from being tired
if i am tired, the words will hurt, its like my defenses are down

Being called a "bad mother" would really hurt. I have devoted my life to my children and have always done my very best to be a good mother.
