nucleotides are not quite made up of the same thing. they all have a phosphate, a sugar, and a base. the base is what is slightly different (the sugar is also different between ribonucleotides and deoxyribonucleotides). they are similar, the base is different.

There can be VARIATIONS of the same nucleotide--just as there are shades of the same color.
