I don't know if he is a rockstar, but he is definitely one of the greatest musicians ever. Integrity and talent in one package.

Creativity and originality are Tom's strong suits, but I would be hesitant at calling him the greatest american rockstar. I can think of two off the top of head that you would have to argue with:
Bruce Springsteen
Jim Morrison
I have a hard time deciding between those two. But I give the nod to Jim because his stage presence was frightening.

Tom Waits is great, but I don't know if he's really a rockstar. There are a lot of people who don't know who he is. He's definitely one of the greatest American musician/songwriters ever.

But he could very well be in someone's (perhaps your) opinion.
That's the thing, just about any artist is somebody's favorite.

THE Greatest? Hmmm.. but I'd def' put him up there as One of the greatest American rock songwriters for sure.

Greatest American songwriter of our time. But please don't put him in the same genre as KISS or be a music snob by namedropping him to sound cool.

but he is pretty f*cking amazing ...
p.s. I know some pretty music obsessed people, and they don't know him.
