Please help! I was stuck in a bad rain storm yesterday through about 1.5 feet of water and the car stalled. I was able to restart it and drove home about 1 mile away. By the time I got home, the engine starts to knock very loud. The air filter was totally wet and it appeared that some water got into the air intake. The oil appears to be normal, no water. I towed the car to a mechanic and is waiting to be checked. The knocking improves about 30% and the car can now start and run OK .... but the knocking remains. Please give me some advices. Thank you very much in advance.

If water got into the intake it got into a cylinder or two. The noise you hear is probably a bent connecting rod and/or damaged piston. The mechanic can sort it out for you>

If enough water gets into your intake and thereby into the cylinders, it can damage or even lock up the engine as water is not compressable like air in the combustion chambers and it causes damage to the reciprocating parts of the engine like pistons, rods or bearings which are put under enormous hydraulic pressure they are not designed for. The knocking noise may be the engine crankshaft bearings or other components are damaged from the water intrusion into the cylinders. Be prepared for a hefty repair bill. Insurance may or may not cover the damage depending on the circumstances --check with your agent. Sorry.

Could be the water or dampness in the intake manifold diluted the octane rating of the fuel, and should go away with time and use, providing it is not a rod or bearing knock, and just an octane ping or knock.
If there is not any water in the crankcase, I wouldn't worry too much.

your best bet is tootake your spark plugs out and then turn the engine over. See if anythings comes out, If your getting water to shoot out. Try to take a wet vac and suck it out of the cylinders. Spray WD-40 in the cylinders to lubricate the cylinders clean plugs and crank up. If you want to get rid of the check engine light, disconnect the battery for a few seconds. But make sure you have the code for your radio (If it needs one) Remember this is a cheap way to do it. I just did this to my truck when mudding. Now i'm up and runnig again. That was 2 years ago and no problems today.

The oils need to be drained and the filter changed---twice--you got water in the oil --which is the same as NO oil at all--the motor is going to be ruined. Next time do NOT drive in deep water. Pay attention to what you are doing all the time--especially in heavy rain.
