ANYONE who confuses the objection to ILLEGAL activity with RACISM is too stupid to hold the office of President.
I don't believe Obama is STUPID so he MUST have ulterior motives.
I think he just wants to agitate those who ARE stupid enough to be unable to recognize the difference!
You aren't one of THOSE are you?
I think you are asking this question just to see how many of us ARE that stupid.

There are two issues here-so--one at a time.

a) racism. On the political side, Obama HAS to make it clear his is going to address any issues of racism--just as a white conservative would HAVE to indicate his support for "individual responsibility." (never mind what the neocons do--I'm just pointing out that certain rhetoric is required, even if its only symbolic)

But there is also a very real component here. Most decent Americans would like to believe racism is dead--or at least dying. And--although racists don't wield the power they once did, racism in the US is still very much alive. And we need to face that fact--avoiding the issue won't make it go away, it just gives bigotry a chance to spread.

b) the illegal immigrants. First of all, these people are NOT criminals, per se. Being in the US illegally is a civil violation, not a criminal offense (thus, in the same category as a parking ticket, though obviously more serious). Andmost are otherwise law-abiding. Further--regardless of how it happened, there are 12 million of them. Nonsensical rhetoric from the right-wing notwithstanding, it issimply not practical to try to deport them. We need to accept that, and develop both a legal status for those here (that does NOT mean "automatic citizenship, or any other such silliness) and a guest worker program so we don't get this mess again in another 20 years.

Beyond that, we do need to recognize that, while many Americans have concerns about the illegals, others are simply bigots--and where these scum are concerned, yes, we should support the illegals.

That is one tired argument. It doesn't matter what race they are...they are in this country illegally.

ILLEGALLY....as in breaking the laws of the United States.

And yes, the majority are Hispanic.

Obama is pandering for the Latino vote...shameful.

Anybody who wants to stand up for illegals will NOT get my vote.

Now that's funny considering that he used to have his own racist web page and one of his speeches threatened racial riots if he wasn't elected.

It doesn't matter if he is green or blue, he is just stating a fact. Don't be surprised if you hear the same thing from Hillary Clinton.
