Turkey, in the guise of the Ottoman Empire, grew and prevailed over large parts of West Asia, North Africa and Eastern Europe for many centuries from about 1100 with the Seljuk Turks. It was the Ottoman Empire that finally ended the Roman Empire by taking Constantinople in 1453. However, like all Empires do, the Ottoman Empire declined. It was finally ended after defeat in World War 1 in 1918. 800+ years is not a bad innings.
