There are some stories that say Zeus/Jupiter had another wife before he married Hera/Juno, named Metis. There was a prophecy that Metis would bear a son that would one day overthrow Zeus. So to keep this from happening, Zeus tricked her into turning herself into a fly and then swallowed her. However, she had already conceived Athena/Minerva, who began stabbing at the inside of Zeus' head. One of the other gods (sources differ as to whether it was Prometheus, Hephaestus, Hermes or Palaemon) cut his head open with an axe and Athena was born, fully grown, dressed in armor.

My favorite story about Athena is the story of Arachne, which you can read about in the wikipedia link below.

Edith Hamilton's books on Mythology are what you need. I know Greek mythology quite well, but I have never had an interest in what the Romans did to Greek mythology.

Look up Minerva or Athena on Google, read the encyclopedia, or if you can get to a library, get a dictionary of Classical Mythology and read those entries

She was born of Zeus (Jupiter), spring full grown in armor from his forehead. Talk about a headache. This made Zeus's wife Hera very jealous of her. She is the goddess of crafts and weaving.

I like revenge stories so here is one in a nutshell. Arachne, a mortal, could spin beautiful clothes. She was very boastful and claimed she was better than Athena (Minerva). Big mistake. Athena challenged her to a contest. Athena won and changed Arachne into a spider so she could spin forever.

Good luck with your research.
