Sorry Coach, but it is you who needs to go back to school and learn history. It was not JFK who first sent troops into Vietnam. If we are talking about the Second Indochina War then it was Eisenhower who sent troops into Vietnam as advisers in 1954 in violation of the 1954 Geneva Agreements. JFK increased the number of advisers and also their role to include combat. LBJ was the first to send purely combat troops into Vietnam.
If you are talking in general -- then it was Roosevelt that sent troops into Vietnam in 1944 (members of the OSS -- the forerunner of the CIA) to arm and train the Viet Minh led by Ho Chi Minh and General Giap.
If you are talking about the First Indochina War (when the Viet Minh were fighting against the French for independence) then it was Harry Truman in late 1947 to help the French.

Sorry rrtzac, Nixon did NOT put troops in Vietnam in the 60's. You need to go back to history class. Oh, I guess your bleeding heart liberal teachers told you that and you believed them. As history goes, Kennedy put troops in Vietnam. Yes, Kennedy, a democrat....imagine that! Nixon pulled the troops OUT of Vietnam. Whats that, a republican....oh, gosh NO WAY! Yes Way!

The conventional answer is two-fold: 1) we came to the aid of a country (South Vietnam) that was being threatened with a takeover by its hostile neighbor, North Vietnam; 2) we took a stand against Communisit expansion in Asia based on our subscription to "the domino theory" (that one domino falling would knock over the next which would knock over the next, etc).

At the time the object was to keep the Northern commies
from over-running the somewhat Democratic South. Same
as the turmoil with Korea. Korea was semi-settled with
an uneasy truce. Nam was settled when the citizenry(U.S.)
demanded that the military turn tails and run. --Is
history maybe repeating itself ?
