Already installed windows on my hitachi deskstar. I want to buy a WD Raptor and re-install windows on to it. How difficult will it be to remove everything from my current HDD and use it as a slave to my new WD Raptor and will the trouble and $150 be worth the performance gains?

Since I know you built this pretty recently, I assume your current drive is SATA, which means you will not be making it a slave, master and slave stuff is not applicable in the SATA world. As for how difficult, you will have to reinstall most likely, although there are some transfer programs available to avoid that. As for is it worth it, you will notice a slight gain, but also be prepared more noise, the Raptors are loud.

It will be simple. Just be sure you have your F6 sata drivers when you install windows. Dont even have the Hitachi hooked up when you install windows cuz you can accidently install your OS onto the hitachi and if you have an OS installed on a D drive you cant rename it, only reinstall the OS. I have 2 Raptors in a Raid0 array on my gaming rig. Raptors are incredible hard drives!! I have 4 of them!!

It wont be difficult at all, before you start though. You should make some preparations. First off, make sure you have enough space in your case, a spare power connector, and an IDE cable. If your buying a sata drive, make sure your motherboard supports sata, and you have an extra sata power and connection cable.

To make the drive slave on IDE, just set the jumpers in the back. The hard drive will have a diagram with the jumpers showing you how to make it slave. If the new drive is sata, all you need to do is plug it in and the motherboard will read the sata drive first automatically making the IDE drive slave.

Hope this helps.
