I want to eliminate my landline phone bill. DSL is only $20 less than what my phone bill is running. Cable is less than dsl plus it includes tv. Is cable connection as fast as dsl though?

I would have to say that you get what you pay for.

My DSL, through my telephone company is 3.0 Mbps, and I pay $19.95 per month (added to my regular phone bill). I can upgrade (speed) to 10.0 Mbps, or even go fiber optic 15.0Mbps, but those higher speeds are more expensive.

On the same hand, upon checking with my local cable provider, they have plans (different speed ranges) also ..... 5 Mbps, 10 Mbps, and 15 Mbps. There too, price goes up as the speed goes up.

DSL has limitations, you have to be located within a certain distance of a "hub". I tried getting ATT/Yahoo DSL, but I was 10 miles from the hub, and they told me I was out of their service area, even tho it was considered a local call for me.

If you do choose DSL, you are still going to need a phone line to connect to it. So totaly eliminateing your "landline phone bill" would not be possible.

First both sytems are communal. The more people using it, the slower it gets. If both system have low traffic and you want to spend the money, cable can be faster than DSL. To compete with DSL's pricing, you can get a service that matches DSL at low traffic. You also want to check out quality of service. How often does your DSL service go down? Of often does your cable go out? Where I live, cable goes out equal to about 10 days a year on average.

If your talking about getting broadband through the cable connection, then yes broadband is alot faster, and more reliable then dsl.

In terms of theoretical peak performance, cable modems run faster than dsl.Broadband runs at 30 Mbps of bandwidth, where as most forms of dsl dont even reach 10 Mbps.

Well, DSL is not limited to 1.5. However...the overall available bandwidth that comes from coaxial cable versus a twisted pair comes from noise suppression. The coaxial cable is able to suprress the noise much better allowing for more overall total bandwidth. However, as the telephone companies get rid of the regulatory issues that block their network expansion, they will be able to start delivering their next generation product. This will be VDSL, capabale or delivering 52mbps. This will allow them to deliver tv signals over the phone line.

I have Charter 6mb/s internet, and my friend has DSL, and his only clocks at 4mb/s. Cable internet has been very reliable for me, my internet is down only when a serious storm happens, whereas my friend loses his because of high winds sometimes. Plus, it comes with tv. What's better than that deal?

Yes it is.
Even the fastest optical connection will slow down to the speed, of the website you are visiting.
It's faster than dialup, in rendering images, etc...but the entire internet is limited, at the website you are visiting.
So cave as much money as you can.
