Call the two numbers x and y:

so the sum is 43 -- > x + y = 43

and the product is 442 --> xy = 42

Solve one of the two equations for x or y and substitute into the other one!

x = one number, then
43-x = other number
So x(43-x) = 442
43x - x^2 -442 = 0
(-x+26)(x-17)= 0
x = 17 or 26 = the two numbers
