The protagonist is NOT the hero. For example, in many of Poe's writings, the protagonist is actually the villain. Protagonist simply means the character that the story or plot line is centered around. The antagonist is the figure that opposes the protagonist, meaning the antagonist could be the hero.

Put simply: The protagonist is just the good guy (or girl) in a story.
The answer above is also partly true; sometimes it is a little more complicated than just good guy/bad guy, but considering you're 13 years old, it's probably easiest to think about this way.
