piston56's answer is ther real reason, but not in they way he thinks it is. The employees at most fast food restaurants do not care about customer service. They think that they are doing you a favor by taking your order and you should be thankful that they are willing to interrupt their busy day to take care of you!
Management needs to train and supervise the employees. They also need to have enough people working!

It was established as fast food years ago when McDonalds first came out with one size hamburger, fries, and drink. As more places came about they had the same idea--mass producing food ahead of time. Now the menus have a hundred different things you can choose from. That doesn't mean McDonalds is going to change their stance from fast-food to a nicer food establishment because customers want a BigMac as opposed to the simple hamburger. It's still fast. Stop rushing through everything.

It used to be fast, because it was a simple menu of only a few items on a production line, but as people want more choice, and customized orders all this slows things down. I read back when Wendy's first opened there was 5 items now there's what 30?

I think its because the unemployment rate is so low that the fast food industry must employ the absolute worst employees.
There is always a positive side to an economic recession... people start to respect their jobs more.
Bush will bring the recession we so desparately need.

Idiots I tell ya, idiots - either the one who just quit working and left the others hanging . . . last week; or those, as you describe, who cannot make one order for everyone 'cuz doin' the math to make change is just too hard;' or those who, even though the menu hasn't noticeably changed in several years still can't decide what the h--- they want to eat; or the fact that everybody wants to go to the same place at the same time; or the person in front of you ordered the weirdest, least ordered item on the menu and the cook needs to find it and figure out out to make it. Then there's the cliche language barrier that will occasionally arise - no offense, it happens.

If you are going to the fast food outlets you are in the wrong place. You should be in the faster food drive through.

No kidding! I've noticed this lately with McDonald's, which is supposed to be the epitome of fast food. It's ridiculous. I think a lot of it is due to incompetent employees.

I can tell you've never worked food service princess. Do you think McDonald's magically creates your food out of thin air? It has to be prepped and cooked you know. There are other customers too, so unless you're the prime minister of Canada, don't expect special treatment.

They get in a rush around the noon hour. The only reason they call it "Fast" is because they cook it ahead of time. Yuk. Grams
