alan and ben both have blue hats ?

If all three can see each other, and one of alan and ben has a blue hat, then carl knows that he doesn't. (Probably alan - alan sees two red, doesn't know; ben sees one red one blue, doesn't know - so carl is sure he has red.)

if they are seated face to back then Carl is probably the one who is at the back so when he opens his eyes he can see the two hats his friends are wearing.
