Remember WMD - the reason for invasion - or have you swallowed the old "we got Saddam Hussein" routine?
When the last coalition soldier steps off Iraqi soil the place will degenerate into total, bloody civil war as every religious sect attempts to gain superiority over the others. The same situation as per pre Saddam. Whatever Government is put in place by the coalition it will last about 5 minutes after troop withdrawal.
Then what? Go back in to remove another "evil dictator"?
As for Afghanistan - which country backed the Taliban against the Communist backed Government. And which group succoured Bin Laden?
Had certain countries kept their nose out of the affairs of other countries over the last 60 years the world would be a safer place.
I've got a son - a veteran of both campaigns and now deployed yet again. Do I consider the possible loss of my son as worth it for this "fight against terror" - no fecking way!!!

Assume you mean all those freedom lovers who happen to want a MacShit Burger Queen on every corner. Freedom lovers? Americans? Don't make me laugh. You only stopped practising segregation a few years before South Africa. Freedom for who? Freedom for the US to rip off any country they think they can exploit or bomb it to bits if they don't like it. Solution: Stay out of other countries.

99% of them are all talk and no action. They don't have the power to back up their empty threats. They caught us unprepared once but it won't happen again. You warmongers are the true cowards, because you're afraid to set foot outside your houses unless we wipe out everyone who doesn't like us. That's foolish. Being the most powerful nation in the world means we don't have to fight to prove it.
Redphish is absolutely right. Conventional warfare only gives them another reason to hate us. It's not the appropriate way to deal with terrorists.
We could take a lesson from the French when it comes to fighting the war on terror. A few years ago, some would-be hijackers tried to take control of a plane while it was on a runway in France. A special police unit, the French equivalent of a SWAT team, stormed the plane and killed all of the hijackers. That's how you fight terrorism.
I have very little admiration for Cheney, but he was the only one I know of who reacted appropriately on 9/11. While Dubya was sitting like a deer in the headlights in a classroom pretending to read an upside-down book, Cheney was scrambling fighter jets to attempt to intercept the remaining planes. Sure, it would have been horrific to be forced to shoot down planes with Americans aboard, but it would have saved thousands of other lives and it would have sent a message to the world that we deal with terrorists harshly. Fighting in Iraq doesn't send that message.

Iraq has just been a breeding ground for the fanatics we were supposed to be stamping out. There are enough factions over there that when we leave, they'll turn on each other. We can keep Iran and Syria out of it with diplomacy and cruise missles.
They can blow themselves up and let God sort it out.

I'm anti-war, on this war, because this war is being fought for the wrong reasons. The government admits there is no connection between the aleged "Al-Queda" and Saddam Hussein. Also, where are all of these "Weapons of Mass Destruction" ? I don't remember seeing those paraded by for us all to see. We have attacked a non-threatening country, and have had thousands of our young people killed or maimed for nothing.
Maybe they don't hate us because of our freedoms, perhaps they hate us because of our government's policies over the years.
Chris G. : Perhaps the day has come to take care of our own people and problems, and let Israel fend for themselves. According to how I read your post, our young men are dying in Iraq in part because Iran threatened Israel. So what ?

Sadly this War on Terror is going to have to continue for a LONG time until some sort of peace comes about between the world. One thing we must continue doing is do what we know to be right...regardless of wanting votes, how many American soldiers are lost in the cause, or anything.
People in the military, like myself, know that we could die. But I would rather die for my country, for its people, and for any others who need our help.
Harrison Ford said it right in Air Force One, " Never again will I allow our political self-interest to deter us from doing what we know to be morally right. Atrocity and terror are not political weapons. And to those who would use them, your day is over."
...To Saddam who paid 25,000 to a family who sent their son in the streets of Isreal with a bomb to kill Jewish people in a suicide attack...
...to Akmademijad, the Iranian President, who swears death and nuclear destruction to Isreal...
and to anyone else who uses terror to get what they want. We make war so that we may have peace. Taking out Iraq was a pre-emptive strike to prevent another world war, possibly one with nuclear weapons.
If you think we invaded a country where all the people were happy, no genocide was occuring, women and children could roam the streets safely, where son-in-laws were not executed by the leader, and government money went to help villages that had no water or electricity...then you are wrong.
Iraq was in shambles, and last year things started looking good. The economy increased 80% higher than it ever was when Saddam was in power. Villages are getting all they need, genocide has stopped, people can experience freedom and democracy. If anyone has been there, like I have, you will knowyou get nothing but people saying thank you, mothers crying saying their children are safe again, and fathers proud to have us on their side....
I am tired of the Democratic party downplaying this war. Saying it is useless, and not growing a pair of balls and admitting they signed the law that sent our troops over there. They say Bush lied to them. Bush never lied...because he said what Clinton said. Saddam must be stopped, he is acheiving nuclear capabilities, and he must be stopped.
Put yourself in Bush's place. He has only JUST gotten into office. You are in Florida reading books to kindergarten kids when you hear the World Trade Center had a plane fly into it. Then you hear of another. Then 2 more crash, one into the Pentagon and another in a field. Then a terrorist leader, Osama Bin LAden, takes full responsibility for the attacks and promises more. Then you have Saddam Hussain, paying suicide bombers and terrorists....who is also claiming he has WMD's...he has just kicked out UN inspectors (that was on his 15th UN treaty violation)...and he is claiming to have nuclear power soon.
How would you act? What Bush did was a pre-emptive strike to stop a mad man who could not be proven to be nice, considerate, or anything along those lines. He was a mass murderer who needed to be ousted. The country of Iraq had no government since Saddam was put in power...and a new form had to be put in, since a dictatorship was out of the question. So we give them democracy...because it works here, and elsewhere.

I do not believe there are that many people who want to kill all Americans. There are even less I would bet that want to kill all Freedom Lovers.
I am not afraid.
Make no mistake, this failed ME policy is creating more each day it continues.
If President Bush keeps this up much longer, his and your paranoid delusions will become reality.

Dont mess with their domestic affairs and they probably wont come knocking at our door. Its funny how countries like Sweden and Switzerland dont get suicide bombers, maybe it might have something to do with the fact that they dont interfere in the affairs of other nations......?

There is no easy solution. The only way to combat people like these is constant vigilance and striking when we find a group of them planning something. Conventional warfare achieves little and is powerful motivation for people to join these organizations.
